ThermoFisher Scientific Talos F200i – Transmission Electron Microscope
The ThermoFisher Scientific Talos F200i is one of the most advanced transmission electron microscopes (TEM) of its generation and represents the central instrument of our Surface Analysis Laboratory. It is designed to combine high resolution, powerful analytical capabilities, and exceptional stability, enabling comprehensive studies of materials on the micro-, nano- and even sub-nanometer scale. At our institute, we use it to uncover the hidden connections between microstructure and material properties – essential both for fundamental scientific excellence and for applied research in collaboration with industry.
Advantages and Capabilities:
-
High spatial resolution: Talos F200i enables the observation of nanostructures, crystal defects, grains, and phase boundaries with outstanding clarity. This is indispensable for the development of new materials, since even the smallest structural variations can strongly influence strength, magnetic behavior, or corrosion resistance.
-
Super-X EDS system: Four symmetrically positioned detectors provide exceptionally efficient X-ray signal collection. This results in faster, more accurate, and more reliable elemental mapping, offering a detailed insight into the distribution of elements in complex nanostructures and thin films.
-
Dual-side EDS analysis: The ability to analyze from both sides of the specimen increases flexibility and accuracy, minimizing errors caused by shading or sample geometry.
-
In situ experiments with ProtoChips: By using specialized ProtoChips holders, we can perform dynamic measurements at temperatures up to 1200 °C. This allows real-time monitoring of processes such as oxidation, recrystallization, diffusion, or catalytic activity – offering unique insights into how materials behave under real operating conditions.
-
Speed and automation: Talos F200i integrates automated data acquisition and excellent system stability, enabling researchers to collect high-quality data more efficiently. This increases laboratory productivity and provides faster turnaround for industrial partners.
-
Versatility in sample types: The instrument is suitable for a wide range of materials – from metals and ceramics to semiconductors and advanced composites – making it highly adaptable across different research and industrial applications.
-
Extended analytical integration: The combination of high-resolution imaging and advanced chemical analysis can be complemented by other techniques available in our laboratory (SEM, XPS, SAM, EBSD), providing a comprehensive picture of the material.
Importance for IMT and the wider community
For our institute, the Talos F200i represents a strategic research capability, enabling analyses that are otherwise available only in a few leading facilities in the region. Combined with the expertise of our researchers and the wide range of complementary techniques, we can provide a complete workflow – from sample preparation to advanced characterization.
For research, this means we can collaborate on equal footing with leading European centers, contributing results at the highest international level. For industry, the Talos F200i brings direct benefits: faster process optimization, the development of new materials, and improvements in product quality. It is particularly valuable in sectors such as energy, automotive, aerospace, electronics, and nanotechnology, where material performance at the nanoscale is critical.
Because of these advantages, the Talos F200i TEM is the core of our laboratory, connecting us to European research projects (Horizon Europe, COST, ERC) and at the same time enabling us to provide world-class research support for industry in Slovenia and beyond.
