The vision in the framework of a Multi-regional Centre of Excellence Advanced Metallic Materials CoE-AMM is the creation of a list of specific knowledge and the development of suitable technologies allowing Slovenian industry to breakthrough into the most economically developed EU regions amidst the healthy competitiveness of other developed countries.
Research excellence CoE-AMM combining critical mass of knowledge and adequate research infrastructure for potential breakthrough of this centre onto the top of world science and into international networks of excellence.
The research groups (from the Institute of Metals and Technology, Jožef Stefan Institute and the University of Ljubljana) participating in the Centre of Excellence were already established leaders in their respective fields in Slovenia and well recognized in the global world of science. This can be confirmed by the quality and quantity of their publications (approximately 1000 papers in international journals and 1500 citations) and their participation in international projects. The researchers carried out 3FP5 projects (SMARTWELD, RHEO-LIGHT, IMPECABLE) and 2 RFCS projects (OPTHEAT) and they are also successfully involved in the 6FP projects (AMBIO), 2 ITER projects.
Education is one of the most important role of the Centre. The research partners have already educated many of the research-and-development workers in industry. Many masters and PhD dissertations were linked to the activities of the enterprises (Naglič, Steiner Petrovič, Kokalj, Založnik, Kosmač and Šolar). During recent years we have created for Slovenia a specific post-graduate education, namely a PhD qualification that is related to an industrial project. The project is executed at the research partner(s) of the Centre, at the university or the International Postgraduate School of the Jožef Stefan Institute.
Organization of an annual-international-scientific meeting known as International Conference of Materials and Technologies in Portorož with the special session dedicated to young researchers (10 minutes oral contributions) and one day of the conference is dedicated to Slovenian industry.
Organization of annual workshop on Basics and application of analytical techniques for surface analysis at IMT Ljubljana, run by internationally known Prof. J.T.Grant from Dayton University, Ohio, USA.
Organization of international workshops within IUVSTA, FEMS and IFHTM.
Publishing activity: Scientific journal Materials and Technologies, which was accepted to Web of Science for citations and gained an IF on 1 Jan 2007, publishing of monographers from the field.
Publishing in scientific pages in Delo/Science, Finances etc.
Special attention of CoE-AMM is dedicated to the development of research infrastructure.
Interface between industry and academia CoE-AMM direct transfer of knowledge into the industry: qualification of researchers of leading research institution IMT in industry. Young researcher are improving there knowledge in industry at site for at least for 6 months, up to 1 year. In the frame of the CoE-AMM, IMT trained together with ACRONI and IMPOL 7 researchers. 3 of them complete their postgraduate study with the PhD degree. At IMT qualified researcher (A. Jaklič) has become a director of a research department at ACRONI and (Gorazd Kosec) finished his PhD after being postgraduated student of ACRONI at IMT.
